We are going to be talking about finding a suitable retirement home for your parent and while this is not a convenient topic it is one that we need to review since our parents will require ongoing care as they age. The first thing we have to do is realize that our parents need specialized care and you cannot provide that care on an ongoing basis especially if you have to work and take care of your own family. While we naturally want the best for our parents coming to terms with the reality that they need ongoing help is one of the greatest challenges that must be addressed. Once you have accepted that reality then finding the right retirement home becomes much easier.

There are numerous retirement homes to choose from and you should include your parent in the decision-making process. If your parent is not involved in the decision-making process then they may resent the fact they are being forced into the home so try to incorporate them into the decision-making so they feel they have a “say” in what is going to happen to them.

Something to look for when reviewing the various retirement homes is whether they have a good ratio of residents to employees. The lower the number the more personalized care your family member will receive which should help give you peace of mind knowing that your loved one is getting the care they need on a regular basis. Aside from the staffing ratios look at the activities that the staff will be providing at the retirement home, you want your loved one to have activities so they don’t spend the last years of their life staring at a television screen. By accepting this reality you will feel empowered knowing you are giving your parent the care they need just like they cared for you as a child.
